As part of SCI’s belief in holistic programming to address the mental, physical and spiritual needs of the people we serve, we provide daily access to cultural and recreational enrichment. This includes on-site lending libraries, yoga and dance classes, movement and athletic activities, and regular outings to museums and other cultural institutions.
We also operate the Open Art Studio (currently for women residents in Brooklyn only), which is an innovative program that allows residents to find the artist within. Women are provided the personal freedom to explore their creative selves and make art that expresses feelings and emotions. Participants are encouraged to use drawing materials, clay, wood, paper, and found objects and fabric to create their pieces. For these women, the art process becomes the tool from which to build self-esteem and face internal and external struggles. The experience of making art teaches, informs and confirms that goals are achievable and the studio itself becomes a supportive community experience. From this place of strength, the women learn and relearn to live and thrive independently. Over time, participants have produced a collection of art that is stunning, revealing, and inspirational.
